Get in the shave ice lineClassicAsked most
Matsumoto's has been doing it since 1951 and the line is part of the experience. Go before 11 or after 3 to skip most of it. Ice cream on the bottom, condensed milk on top.
Walk the harbor and the old bridgeFree
Haleʻiwa boat harbor is where the surf and dive boats leave from. Walk out the breakwater for the view west toward Kaʻena. The green Anahulu Stream bridge on the edge of town is the photo everyone takes.
Haleʻiwa Aliʻi Beach ParkSwim
The town beach. Calm and swimmable in summer, a surf contest site in winter. Showers, restrooms, lifeguards and free parking.
See the turtles at Laniakea10 min east
Green sea turtles haul out on the sand at Laniakea most afternoons. Park across the road, cross carefully, and stay back the distance the volunteers mark out. Ten minutes from town.
Eat from a truckLunch
Garlic shrimp is the North Shore dish and there are trucks in town and up the coast. Pick the one with a line and eat at the picnic tables. Cash helps.
Fly the coast from Dillingham Airfield15 min west
Fifteen minutes west of town, a glider ride takes you over the whole North Shore with no engine running. You see Haleʻiwa, the harbor, the reef and the ridges in one slow turn. Flights are 20, 30 or 60 minutes. Book the morning slot, then come back to town for lunch.
