Helicopter tours
Is a helicopter tour on Oahu worth the money?

The answers
The good ones are very goodThe praiseAsked most
Oahu from the air is a different island. The helicopter covers all of it: Diamond Head, the windward cliffs, Sacred Falls, the North Shore. Pilots narrate the whole way and the big operators run clean, well kept aircraft. If you want the full island in one hour, nothing else does that.
The price is the first complaintThe cost
Helicopter tours are priced per person, so a couple pays twice, and doors-off tours and seat upgrades add more on top. Rates move with the season and the operator, so check current prices directly rather than trusting an old thread.
The airport eats your morningThe time
Most tours leave from Honolulu airport. Check-in is usually 30 to 45 minutes before the flight, then a safety video, then the weigh-in. A 45-minute flight becomes a three-hour block of your day once you count the drive and the wait.
You may not get the seat you wantSeating
Six passengers share the cabin and seats are assigned by weight, not by request. Some people end up in the middle. If it matters to you, ask before you pay, and know that most operators will not promise a window.
Weather cancels flightsWeather
Rain and low cloud ground helicopters, and the pilot makes the call on the day. Book early in your trip so there is room to rebook. This is true for every air tour on the island, including ours.
The option nobody mentionsWhat most people miss
There is a second way to see the North Shore from the air. A glider ride is a real aircraft with no engine, flown by an FAA-certificated pilot, and it carries you, or you and one other person. No engine noise, no strangers, no airport. Flights leave from Kawaihāpai (Dillingham) Airfield in Mokulēia and run 20, 30 or 60 minutes, priced per flight rather than per person. It does not loop the whole island. It gives you the best part of it, quietly.
